Shafts:

There are a variety of "suggestions" in the literature on shaft length.  The J. Putterman "standard" for shaft length is 35 1/2", heel of the putter to tip of the grip, which  typically fits a person between 5'9" and 6'.  The  simplest way to determine shaft length is to measure your current putter, from the heel to the tip of the grip.     If you want it shorter , subtract; if you want it longer, add.

There is  a chart below that  gives you different ranges--height vs shaft length.  If you really want to get more accurate, there is an article included  that shows the method for measuring.

If this is a gift,   we recommend   that you estimate height of the giftee and order accordingly.  If    an award/trophy, we recommend that you specify the standard shaft length of 35 1/2".    But, we will cut it to whatever you want it!  And...shafts of

Putterman putters can be shortened by your local golf store...However, if you want to lengthen the putter shaft after purchase, Putterman will have to do it.  Once again, you can always    call, text or email  at   (505) 730-9723 or  gzuraabq@gmail.com

                                                 DETERMINING THE PUTTER LENGTH

The nice thing about the rules for measuring for putter length is that there are few rules.  The important thing is to find a length that allows you to relax your shoulders, doesn’t cause too much pressure on your back, gets your eyes aligned over the ball, and facilitates a smooth pendulum stroke.   The goal should be to find a putter that fits your putting stroke rather than changing your stroke to fit the putter.

Standard putter lengths run from 32” to 52” (a belly putter).  J. Putterman putters are a traditional style and can be cut to lengths between 32” to 40”.

So, how do you know?

  1. If you’re the golfer, own a putter, and are satisfied with the way it feels, measure it! The measurement is done by placing the putter upright on a hard surface and measuring from the heal of the putter head to the tip of the shaft.  Add or subtract length as you see fit to get to that comfort zone.

  2. If you are buying a Putterman putter as a gift or trophy (and you’re not in a position to ask the recipient), figure that a six-foot man with a “wrist to floor” length of about 32” will likely be comfortable with a 35” – 36” putter.  A 5’6” woman would be more likely comfortable with a 33”-34” putter.

Remember that a shaft can always be cut down and re-gripped if necessary.  Adding length is another matter; the putter would have to be re-shafted.  So when in doubt, buy long.

                                                           PUTTER SHAFT LENGTH

HEIGHT                                            POSSIBLE PUTTER LENGTH

5' TO 5' 5"                                                       33"-34"

5' TO 5' 8"                                                       33 1/2" --34 1/2"

5' 8" TO 6'                                                       35 1/2 "--36"

6' TO 6' 4"                                                       35 1/2" -- 36"

6' 4" AND TALLER                                          36" AND UP

Too short?  You will probably stand too close to the ball with your eyes beyond the ball.  There will be a tendency to lift the heel of the putter off the ground and may create a "push" to the right (assuming a right handed golfer). May cause you to crouch, lock your arms,  and detract from a smooth stroke

Too long?

You will probably stand further from the ball with your eyes inside the ball.  There will be a tendency to lift the toe of the putter off the ground and may create a "pull" to the left (assuming a right handed golfer).

You elbows will likely be close to your body rather than let your arms hang naturally under your shoulders. Having arms bent close to your body may affect your stroke, especially on longer putts. This also increases the cocking of your wrist.

How long should my putter be?

It simply amazes me that a club responsible for 40% or more of the strokes you accumulate in a round of golf receives the least amount of attention when it comes to custom fitting.

Here are some things that usually indicate the wrong length putter.

  • Scuffing the sole of the putter on take away or just prior to impact. (Too Long)

  • Topping or hitting a lot of putts thin. (To Short) Note: excessive body movement will also cause topped/thin putts.

  • Eyes not directly over the ball.(Eyes beyond ball=to short) (Eyes short of ball= to long)

  • You fidget and move around a lot while setting up to putt as if trying to get comfortable. (Too long and/or too short).

There is one thing that is absolutely necessary when you measure the length of your new putter. Your eyes must be directly over the ball.

[Editor's note:  also see Phil Mickleson for an alternate opinion at https://www.google.com/search?q=phil+mickelson+on+putting&oq=Phil+mickleson+on+putt&aqs=chrome.1.69i57j0l5.13087j0j4&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8]

You will never be a great putter if your brain has to deal with compound angles. A piece of string with a small weight tied at one end and held beside your eyes at putting address will quickly show you if your eyes are directly over the ball. Another way is to lay a mirror on the floor..place the ball on the mirror and get into your putting stance. The mirror will show you were your eyes are located.

With the above in mind let's find out the length putter you need.

  • Take your normal putting stance.

  • Use the piece of string or mirror to see if your eyes are directly over the ball .

  • If your eyes are not over the ball

  • Loosen your hands so they will be able to slide up or down the grip.

  • While adjusting your stance (moving closer, more upright, what ever) and the same time allowing your hands to slide up or down on the grip. Establish a comfortable stance and hand location that now has your eyes directly over the ball.

  • Once you have done this, put a piece of tape at the place were your top hand last touches the grip.

  • If your upper hand is above the end of the grip, measure the amount of your hand that is above the grip end and write it down.

  • Now measure from the very bottom of the putter to the piece of tape.

  • If your hand was off the grip, measure to the end of the grip and add the measurement you took above.

  • If you are absolutely sure the adjusted stance and hand position are something you can adjust to then this is the measurement you put in the putting order form.

  • Also measure the length of your current putter to put on an  order form.
